Summary

In Victorian England a witch and a detective are on the hunt for a serial killer in an enthralling novel of magic and murder by the Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Vine Witch

After a nearly fatal blow to the skull, traumatized private detective Ian Cameron is found dazed and confused on a muddy riverbank in Victorian London。 Among his effects: a bloodstained business card bearing the name of a master wizard and a curious pocket watch that doesn’t seem to tell time。 To retrieve his lost memories, Ian demands answers from Edwina and Mary Blackwood, sister witches with a murky past。 But as their secret is slowly unveiled, a dangerous mystery emerges on the darkened streets of London。

To help piece together Ian’s lost time, he and Edwina embark on a journey that will take them from the river foreshore to an East End music hall, and on to a safe house for witches in need of sanctuary from angry mortals。 The clues they find suggest a link between a series of gruesome murders, a missing person’s case, and a dreadful suspicion that threatens to tear apart the bonds of sisterhood。 As the investigation deepens, could Ian and Edwina be the next to die?

Interesting!Set in a time where the Victorian past and the start of a modern technological future overlap within a world of mortals, imps, and witches, this tale of two witch sisters, a witch detective with missing memories, and a killer on the loose quickly grabs your attention。 I immediately wanted book 2 of the series but will have to patiently wait until October 2022。 I will definitely continue this series about Edwina and Ian。

Historical fiction, witches, ghosts, surprises, London。 Interesting ride。 I liked Ian, though I was concerned at first that I wouldn't, and I liked Edwina。 There are some unanswered questions and a hmmmmm! at the end, all leading to the next book。I appreciate historical fiction for many reasons, one of which is that I am reminded of how good we have it in our current world compared to most of history。 My thanks to Amazon First Reads through whom I was able to read this book for free! I chose this as an Amazon Prime First Read。 Victorian London, a mystery, witches。 Yes please。 I did like this story。 And I will certainly check out the next one when it is released。 This series has great potential。 The ending of this first book was such that I want to read more。 There were a few things that bugged me。 The first was using the term mortals。 A lot。 In reference to anyone non-magical。 I mean, I get it, you can't use muggle。 And to make up your own word could potentially be silly。 Bu I chose this as an Amazon Prime First Read。 Victorian London, a mystery, witches。 Yes please。 I did like this story。 And I will certainly check out the next one when it is released。 This series has great potential。 The ending of this first book was such that I want to read more。 There were a few things that bugged me。 The first was using the term mortals。 A lot。 In reference to anyone non-magical。 I mean, I get it, you can't use muggle。 And to make up your own word could potentially be silly。 But, for some reason, I tripped over the word mortal。 It almost felt like a placeholder till a better word was found。It took another reviewer for me to realize the other thing that bugged me a bit。 The characters never developed in my mind。 I mean, yeah, they were there, but barely fleshed out。 Normally I have these really vivid images in my head of what characters look like。 But with this read they were there but more like shadows of characters if that makes any sense。 I don't need a lot of endless descriptions to flesh out characters but this story could use just a titch more。 And yeah, like a few others mentioned, it didn't feel all that British to me。 And at times, not Victorian either。 So a little more research, or assistance from those on the other side of the pond could easily make the second book a four/five star read。 。。。more

Entertaining。Set in Victorian England, the story is of two witch sisters of old bloodlines and a private detective who needs their help。 Great original story with interesting twists and turns。 I usually do not read books about witches, however the description sounded interesting and I'm glad I read the book。 It's very entertaining。 Entertaining。Set in Victorian England, the story is of two witch sisters of old bloodlines and a private detective who needs their help。 Great original story with interesting twists and turns。 I usually do not read books about witches, however the description sounded interesting and I'm glad I read the book。 It's very entertaining。 。。。more

I had no idea what to expect from this having never heard of the author before, and I wouldn't have chosen to read it had it not come to me via amazon's first reads and I was not really being taken by any of the others on offer。Loving a bit of all things witchety I figured I would either love, or hate this; I found myself doing neither and feel most indifferent about it。 It's set in what I assume to be London although don't hold me to that as it could equally be set in Boston or New York。 My rea I had no idea what to expect from this having never heard of the author before, and I wouldn't have chosen to read it had it not come to me via amazon's first reads and I was not really being taken by any of the others on offer。Loving a bit of all things witchety I figured I would either love, or hate this; I found myself doing neither and feel most indifferent about it。 It's set in what I assume to be London although don't hold me to that as it could equally be set in Boston or New York。 My reason for saying this is that a lot of the places described are easily identifiable as London, however a lot of the spelling and wording used is not English English。 It is american english。 Maybe that is down to the author being one nationality whilst trying to write a book set in another country, or due to the publishers, but I found it quite off-putting at times and detracted from the story somewhat。It shifts about a bit and whilst there is continuity as a whole, people (or creatures) will suddenly put in an appearance。 One minute the main male character, Ian, appears to be a mortal man, the next his 'Hob' appears out of nowhere, having never been mentioned or even alluded to in any way。 The little subplots running alongside the main story also tend to take away the focus。 I'm assuming the author was limited to the amount of pages allowed when writing so had to condense a lot of the story - at least that's how it felt to me whilst I was reading。 It's nice to read something with 2 main female characters, however, I'm sure either of them were really portrayed in a very positive light, both seemingly not really being able to function without a man。 On the whole it wasn't an unpleasant book to read and I did go to the very end。 I just feel had it not been quite so disjointed it would have been much more enjoyable, and the plot of the whole murder/mystery side of the story was easy enough to figure out before reaching the halfway point。 。。。more

WowOk there are parts that are quick and parts that are slow but that was one heck of a read。 The last ten percent had more action and twists than the first ninety。 And it ends in a way that ties up the story yet leaves me wanting to know what's next。 Definitely reminds me of a paranormal tinted alternative history type book。 In that there's pieces of London history I'm quite familiar with yet a whole other world rubbed up beside it。 I'm intrigued to see what comes next WowOk there are parts that are quick and parts that are slow but that was one heck of a read。 The last ten percent had more action and twists than the first ninety。 And it ends in a way that ties up the story yet leaves me wanting to know what's next。 Definitely reminds me of a paranormal tinted alternative history type book。 In that there's pieces of London history I'm quite familiar with yet a whole other world rubbed up beside it。 I'm intrigued to see what comes next 。。。more

In some places i felt like the same point was being belabored, but I loved the relationship between Edwina and Ian。 My favorite is when one party starts out uninterested and by the end they see the other person in a totally different light, even though that person hasn't changed that much--it's all in the eye of the beholder。 The magic system was a little soft for me。 I loved how Smith painted London。 The ending was surprising。 Recommend! Enchanting is an understatementI read about a book a week and normally I enjoy them at a leisurely pace in whatever free time my kids give me。 But this book had me addicted in a way I haven't felt about a book in quite a long time。 It truly just flowed so beautifully and I adored the early 1900's London atmosphere combined with the fantastical witches and hobgoblins and pixies and the like。 I wanted to cry when I came to the end knowing my time in that world was near close for now。 Needles to sa Enchanting is an understatementI read about a book a week and normally I enjoy them at a leisurely pace in whatever free time my kids give me。 But this book had me addicted in a way I haven't felt about a book in quite a long time。 It truly just flowed so beautifully and I adored the early 1900's London atmosphere combined with the fantastical witches and hobgoblins and pixies and the like。 I wanted to cry when I came to the end knowing my time in that world was near close for now。 Needles to say, I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing what Edwina and Ian are up to。 Please don't make me wait very long! 。。。more
